An investigative report .. "black funding" behind a new organization targeting Turkey in America
An American research body revealed the existence
of a new organization in the United States called the "Democracy Project
in Turkey" that seeks to pass American policies targeting Turkey, and the
research body added that there are indications that the organization's new
funding comes from countries in the Middle East, with activists and politicians
loyal to Israel and countries behind it. Arab Gulf.
Two researchers at the Quincy Institute's
"Responsible Statecraft" Center said in a report that the
organization (Project Democracy in Turkey) aims to advance US foreign policies
against Turkey, and the researchers' report said that the organization launched
Its business in the summer of this year, without the presence of any Turkish
citizen within their work force or its board of directors.
The report quoted Sarah Lee Whitson, director of
the "Democracy for the Arab World Now" organization - known simply as
"Don" - commenting that the backgrounds of those responsible for the
organization targeting Turkey reflect political, not humanitarian, goals,
considering that targeting a "flawed democracy" in the Middle East,
while Its board members defend some absolute monarchies in the Persian Gulf,
the apartheid state in Israel, and the dictatorship in Egypt "which
suggests that the group's goal is political, not principled."
Who
is behind the organization?
The researchers Eli Clifton and Mortada Hussein
revealed in their report that they had searched for the names of those behind
the "Project for Democracy in Turkey", and found that they included
Frances Townsend, who was responsible for the terrorism file in the
administration of former President George W. Bush, and with her the hard-line
former Senator Joseph Lieberman. Who was one of the biggest promoters of the
war on Iraq, including John Bolton, the former national security advisor to
former US President Donald Trump, and Bolton is known for his aggressiveness.
In their report, the researchers said that the
organization has links to a network of well-funded black money groups, and
promotes US foreign policy positions in the Middle East, which are consistent
with the security interests of Israel and a number of Arab countries in the
region.
It is noteworthy that the term black money refers
to the hidden or unclear financing in the political field.
Scholars Eli Clifton and Morteza Hussein said in their
report that the Project on Democracy in Turkey has links to a network of
well-financed black money groups, and promotes US foreign policy positions in
the Middle East, which align with the security interests of Israel and a number
of Arab countries in the region.
However, one of the most important things that
researchers Clifton and Hussein said in the report is that the one who stands
at the heart of all this is Mark Wallace, the former ambassador to the
administration of former US President George W. Bush to the United Nations. The
report adds that Wallace is currently the head of not only the Turkey Democracy
Project, but also the head of the anti-Iranian organization United Against
Nuclear Iran (UANI), the Counter Extremism Project (CEP), and the arts-based
non-profit organization. It focuses on human rights in Iran called
PaykanArtCar.
The report added that 8 out of 11 senior leaders
of the Project on Democracy in Turkey and members of its advisory board hold
positions in the "United Against Nuclear Iran", the "Countering
Extremism Project" or both.
"United
Counter Extremism Project"
The researchers' report said that all of these
organizations are under the umbrella of a larger and more influential
organization called the Counter Extremism United Project, which raised a
whopping $101 million between 2016 and 2019, according to tax filing reviews.
The report of the researchers on the "United
Counter Extremism Project" says that the mentioned data make it "one
of the largest foreign policy pressure networks operating now, which is
calculated on black finance."
According to the organization's website itself,
which was examined by Al Jazeera, this body says that its role is to educate
the public "against extremism and extremist groups and their fight for
freedom."
The Clifton and Hussein report mentioned that one
of the largest investors and supporters of the organization is Thomas Kaplan,
who is known for his funding and outspoken support for the Iran lobby groups
run by Wallace. Kaplan also maintains extensive commercial and charitable
relationships with the UAE, some of which are public.
In an effort to track further funding sources for
the people behind the organization targeting Turkey, the researchers based on a
set of leaked emails released a few years ago, believed to be from the account
of the Emirati ambassador to the United States, Yousef al-Otaiba. Behind them
Kaplan and Wallace to obtain financing.
The largest sources of funding for the organization
In an attempt to track down more funding sources
for the people behind the organization targeting Turkey, the two researchers
relied on a set of leaked emails released a few years ago, believed to be from
the account of the Emirati ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al-Otaiba,
and these messages show the network’s pursuit Kaplan and Wallace are behind it
for funding. An email from Wallace to Ambassador Otaiba on Sept. 3, 2014,
referred to so-called "cost estimates" for a forum being prepared.
Another exchange of leaked emails dated January
2015 referred to the UAE's support for the Counter Extremism Project. Frances
Townsend requested the support of the Emirati ambassador in Washington in
arranging meetings with Emirati officials, and Townsend concluded her email by
thanking Al Otaiba for his "support of the project's efforts."
".
And again in August 2016, former Republican
Senator Norm Coleman wrote to Ambassador Otaiba in order to provide tax status
to the Counter Extremism Project, which would allow it to receive donations
from individuals.
A
model for pressure organizations in America
It is noteworthy that Israel relies on a number of
pressure organizations that often take the nature of political broadcasts,
including the "Washington Institute for Near East Policy" which is
the research branch of the American Israel Public Relations Committee, known
for its acronym AIPEC. The institute also employs a number of Arab researchers
and publishes several publications in Arabic and English.
This model of pressure organizations is considered
successful in passing policies in the United States, as a number of researchers
in these organizations have been employed in successive American
administrations, and some of them have worked for Al-Hurra TV channel funded by
the US government and issued in Arabic.
It should be noted that this investigative report
was published in conjunction with the American website "The
Intercept" for investigative journalism. .
